Sen. Mark Dayton (DFL), as you probably know, has announced that he will not run again in 2006. Both the Democratic-Farmer-Labor (DFL) and Republican parties are scouting for candidates, and weighing the open Senate seat against GOP Gov. Pawlenty's possible bid for reelection.
The Minneapolis Star-Tribune says that Gov. Pawlenty has been talked up as a soothing but reliably-conservative candidate for the Republican Presidential nomination in 2008. But the easy part of his job as Governor is over and he must deal with an independent-minded Legislature over some very awkward state problems, chiefly fiscal.
