The Midway Islands consist of a circular atoll, 6 mi in diameter, that encloses two islands. Lying about 1,150 mi west-northwest of Hawaii, the islands were first explored by Captain N. C. Brooks on July 5, 1859, in the name of the U.S. The atoll was declared a U.S. possession in 1867, and in 1903 Theodore Roosevelt made it a naval reservation. The island was renamed "Midway" by the U.S. Navy in recognition of its geographic location on the route between California and Japan. Air traffic across the Pacific increased the island's importance in the mid-1930s; the San Francisco-Manila mail route included a regular stop on Midway. Its military importance was soon recognized, and the navy began building an air and submarine base there in 1940. The Battle of Midway, which took place from June 3-6, 1942, was considered a turning point in World War II. After the war, the strategic importance of the island declined; the Midway stop for commercial air traffic was eliminated in 1950, and the air base closed in 1992.

Todays blog: About The US Territory Of The UNITED STATES VIRGIN ISLANDS.
Tomorrows blog: About The US Territory Of The MIDWAY ISLANDS.

The Virgin Islands, consisting of nine main islands and some 75 islets, were explored by Columbus in 1493. They were originally inhabited by the Carib Indians. Since 1666, England has held six of the main islands; the remaining three (St. Croix, St. Thomas, and St. John), as well as about 50 of the islets, were eventually acquired by Denmark which named them the Danish West Indies. In 1917, these islands were purchased by the U.S. from Denmark for $25 million.
Congress granted U.S. citizenship to Virgin Islanders in 1927. Universal suffrage was given in 1936 to all persons who could read and write English. The governor was elected by popular vote for the first time in 1970; previously he had been appointed by the U.S. president. A unicameral 15-person legislature serves the Virgin Islands, and congressional legislation gave the islands a nonvoting representative in Congress. Residents of the islands substantially enjoy the same rights as those enjoyed by mainlanders, but they may not vote in presidential elections.
Tourism is the primary economic activity, accounting for most of the GDP and 70% of employment. All goods made in the Virgin Islands qualify for duty-free entry into the United States. Source: Time Almanac 2005.

The Northern Mariana Islands, east of the Philippines and south of Japan, include the islands of Rota, Saipan, Tinian, Pagan, Guguan, Agrihan, and Aguijan. Although sighted by Ferdinand Magellan in 1521 as he sailed for Spain, the islands were not settled by Europeans until 1668, when missionaries converted the indigenous Chamorro people to Catholicism. They were ruled successfully by Spain, Germany, and Japan before they became a UN Trusteeship (administered by the U.S.) after World War II. The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) became part of the United States in Nov. 1986. Spanish cultural traditions remain strong.
In recent years, Saipan's garment industry has been accused of exploiting thousands of Asian immigrants. Saipan's territorial status enables its employers to claim their clothing is "Made in the USA," while paying workers low wages and sidestepping import duties and tariffs. Source: Time Almanac 2005.

Todays blog: About The US Territory Of The AMERICAN SAMOA.
Tomorrows blog: About The US Territory Of The NORTHERN MARIANA ISLANDS.

American Samoa, a group of five volcanic islands and two coral atolls located some 2,600 mi south of Hawaii in the South Pacific, is an unincorporated, unorganized territory of the U.S. It includes the eastern Samoan islands of Tutuila, Aunu'u, and Rose; three islands (Ta'u, Olosega, and Ofu) of the Manu'a group; and Swains Island. Around 1000 B.C. Protopolynesians established themselves in the islands, and their descendants are one of the few remaining Polynesian societies. The Dutch navigator Jacob Roggeveen sighted the Manu'a Islands in 1722. American Samoa has been a territory of the United States since April 17, 1900, when the High Chiefs of Tutuila signed the first of two Deeds of Cession for the islands to the U.S. (Congress ratified the Deeds in 1929.) Swains Island, which is privately owned, came under U.S. administration in 1925.
Until World War II the United States operated a coaling station and naval base in Pago Pago. During the war, the islands were an important U.S. Marines staging area. In 1960 American Samoa ratified its territorial constitution and has since developed a modern, self-governing political system. American Samoans elect a governor, lieutenant governor, and legislature. The legislature (Fono) consists of two houses: the Senate, selected by village chiefs (matai) for four-year terms, and the House of Representatives, elected by the general population for two-year terms. The people of American Samoa are U.S. nationals, not U.S. citizens, but many have become naturalized American citizens. American Samoa does 80%-90% of its foreign trade with the U.S. Canned tuna is the primary export, earning $300 million annually. Transfers from the U.S. government add substantially to American Samoa's economic well-being. Source: Time Almanac 2005.

Tomorrows blog: About the US Territory of the AMERICAN SAMOA.

Guam is the largest and southernmost island in the Marianas Archipelago. The island is divided into a northern corraline limestone plateau and a southern chain of volcanic hills. Today Guam is an unincorporated, organized territory of the United States. The people of Guam have been U.S. citizens since 1950. They have been represented in the U.S. Congress since 1973 by a nonvoting delegate, but do not participate in presidential elections. The executive branch includes a popularly elected governor, who serves a four-year term. The legislative branch is a 21-member unicameral legislature whose members are elected every two years.
Guam was probably explored by the Portugese navigator Ferdinand Magellan (sailing for Spain) in 1521. The island was formally claimed by Spain in 1565, and its people were forced into submission and conversion to Roman Catholicism beginning in 1668. After the Spanish-American War of 1898, Spain ceded Guam to the United States. From 1899 to 1949, the U.S. Navy administered Guam, except during the Japanese occupation from 1941-1944. Guam was liberated by American military forces in the summer of 1944. Guam's economy is based on tourism and U.S. military spending (U.S. naval and air force bases occupy one-third of the land on Guam.) Source: Time Almanac 2005.

Yesterdays state: Washington DC.
Todays state: Puerto Rico.
Tomorrows blog: About The US Territory Of The GUAM.

*We will be starting a petition at News88 soon as we can to petition Puerto Rico to become the 52nd state of the USA to appeal to the Hispanic Latino American (all three types - Cuban, Mexican, and Puerto Rican) Community as full fledged constitutional citizens and to the PR residents alike. We will request that this become the 52nd state with a Governor and any other statewide elected officials, 2 US Senators, and atleast 1 Atlarge representative depending upon the population of Puerto Rico. But for now lets write and review the latest current statistics of the situation with the currently elected officials of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.

Governor - Anibal Acevido-Vila (PPD.) That is also known as PDP. or the Popular Democratic Party. NEXT ELECTION IN 2008. The other two major parties there are the New Progressive Party and the Puerto Rican Independence Party, a third party.
Senate - No Constitutionally elected US Senators. But under News88's activist plan, This would bring the Senate to 104 Senators (After the 50 states and Washington DC - see yesterdays blog rant article.)
House - AT-LARGE - No Constitutionally elected Us Representatives but the delegate which is known as a Puerto Rico Resident Commissioner Luis Furtuno (PNP.) That is the New Progressive Party and the other two parties are the Popular Democratic Party and the Puerto Rican Independence Party, a third party.

*We will detail this in full as soon as possible about the News88 Team plan to make Puerto Rico a 52nd state of the Usa as Puerto Rico (PR.) abbreviation.

Yesterdays state: Hawaii.

*We will be starting a petition at News88 soon as we can to petition Washington DC to become the 51st state of the USA to appeal to the Black African American Community as full fledged constitutional citizens and to the DC residents alike. We will request that this become the 51st state with a Governor and any other statewide elected officials, 2 US Senators, and atleast 1 Atlarge representative depending upon the population of Washington DC. The name we will request for it as a state to separate the seat of the Federal Government from the residents of the District of Columbia will be similar, but less so, to the Reverend Al Sharpton's view of New Columbia. Because North Carolina already bares the initial abbreviation of NC, we will request that Washington DC become the City of Washington and Columbia District, more appropriately called Washington Columbia. Therefore, it can take the initials of WC. No state currently has those initials/abbreviations, so that should not be a problem. But for now, we will list the currently elected officials of Washington DC and the terms of which their seats come up for election again as of late now.

Mayor - Anthony A. "Tony" Williams (D) is up again in 2006. Under our plan, this would become a Governor job though however but would keep its terms likewise that it had as Mayor.
Senate - No constitutionally elected Us Senators. Under our plan, This will bring the Us Senate from 100 to 102.
House - AT-LARGE - There is a delegate that would be Washington DC's populated area representative in Congress, Democrat Eleanor Holmes Norton. She however currently doesnt have any voting rights or representation, but would under News88's plan of making DC the 51st state.

*We will detail this in full as soon as possible about the News88 Team plan to make Washington DC a 51st state of the Usa as Washington Columbia (WC.)

Yesterdays state: Pennsylvania.
Todays state: New Jersey.
Tomorrows state: New York.

Governor - Acting Governor Richard Codey (D), also the State Senate President and leader of the Democratic Majority of that chamber obviously i think, took office after the bitter scandalized 2001 first term elected Governor Jim McGreevey (D) resigned in 2004. Codey (D) is not in the running for a full term in his own right in the 2005 gubernatorial governors race election, and there is a widely open race for the right to be the next Governor of New Jersey there in 2005. Democrats though, however, are coalesceing behind Senior Senator Jon Corzine (D), to become the next governor, and he faces no formal primary opposition, and Republicans are up in a huge primary field. I can already make my prediction as to whom will probably win this race, and it probably most likely as long as if he stays in, will most likely go to Jon Corzine, who will under the NJ Constitution of the state appoint a successor to his senate seat, making Junior Senator Frank Lautenberg, once a former Senior/Junior Senator, Senior Senator once again of the other senate seat in New Jersey. Thoughts on the New Jersey race? Post your comments.
Senate - Senior Senator Jon Corzine (D) is up again in 2006, though he is currently running for Governor and may likely have an appointed successor in a special election for this seat and/or for a fullterm in 2006's race, while Junior Senator Frank Lautenberg (D) is not up again until 2008. Thoughts on this race? Post your comments.
House - District 1 - Andrews (D)
